The position on this page has consistently been that the forthcoming US Presidential election is a meaningless fop to democracy. As a Total Truth commitment to the campaign for the adoption of democracy in the United States here is a view from the underground American democratic movement.

The US election is a pantomime and a corporate stitch up....it will change nothing, the policies are already in place. America has been privatised the presidential election has all the gravitas of Disneyland.
All smoke and mirrors and mass hypnotism...America is a one party oligarchy and former nation state, democracy is unknown there....or for that matter.... almost anywhere else in the NATO sphere of influence which is now a global phenomenon.

I think it's true that more and more foreign policy in the USA marches to a single drummer no matter what the major party.
ReplyDeleteBut I also know that more and more people in California and Oregon are registering as independent voters and the former state is doing more to break down some of the power of the two party system by eliminating two-party primary ballots (only the top two candidates in terms of votes get to compete in the final election)
More elections have "first, second and third" preference votes on one ballot, giving each voter a way to elect the most desirable candidate by a more nuanced system.
How far it will take to get this to a federal level is unclear but California has traditionally had a major impact on election law throughout the USA.
Thanks for updating me on the situation in California and Oregon. I once read a book many years ago now called 'Ecotopia' ... a novel by Ernest Callenbach.
DeleteYour comment prompted me to look the book up on Wikipedia which is the first time I have revisited it in more than 30 years.
Here's the link to the Wikipedia piece on the book.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecotopia
This is an extract of the Wiki entry
"The book is set in 1999 (25 years in the future, as seen from 1974) and consists of the diary entries and reports of William Weston, a mainstream media reporter who is the first proper American to investigate Ecotopia, a newly formed country that broke from the USA in 1980. Prior to Weston's investigative reporting, most Americans had not been allowed to enter the new country, which is depicted as being on continual guard against revanchism.
The new nation of Ecotopia consists of Northern California, Oregon and Washington; it is hinted that Southern California is a lost cause.
The book is presented as a combination of narrative from Weston's diary and dispatches that he transmits to his publication, the mythical Times-Post."
It made an impact on me so that it easily springs to mind decades after I read it on the recommendation of the head of the psychology Department at the former Wolverhampton Polytechnic (now university)who loaned me the book to read on the train back in 1981.
Its a great book.....but I do believe that the US is no more than a one-party state and oligarchy where the notion of democracy is condemned to remain just that....a notion. Its the same story here though.
UGH, I am sick of the election and it is still three weeks away and then we will either have a new president of keep the old one. Regardless, nothing will change, it never does.
ReplyDelete"Regardless, nothing will change, it never does."
ReplyDeleteNe'er a truer word was spoken Ms C. The president is only the mascot, the face on the packet of America plc a bit like Colonel Sanders or Ronald McDonald, but less real.
The real government never were elected, never will be and most people don't even know who they are.
Never mind it'll soon all be over and I can get on with the deconstruction of the lucky winner. Oh joy!
Have a great weekend Ms C :-)
I look forward to your deconstruction AA.
DeleteMy weekend is starting out very good since I got a visit on my page from my favorite Aardvark.
Hugs
I take a look out for "Ecotopia", AA. It sounds like a interesting bit of alternative history.
