The 1901 assassination of President McKinley created an urgent perception that America was under threat from anarchists. The Department of Justice and the Department of Labor had been keeping records on anarchists for years, but President Theodore Roosevelt wanted more power to monitor them.
The Justice Department had been tasked with regulating interstate commerce since 1887, though it lacked the staff to do so. It had made little effort to relieve its staff shortage until the Oregon land fraud scandal erupted around the start of the 20th century. President Roosevelt instructed Attorney General Charles Bonaparte to create an autonomous investigative service that would report only to the Attorney General.
Bonaparte reached out to other agencies, including the Secret
Service, for personnel, investigators in particular. On May 27, 1908,
Congress forbade this use of Treasury employees by the Justice
Department, citing fears that the new agency would serve as a secret police.Again at Roosevelt's urging, Bonaparte moved to organize a formal bureau of investigation with its own staff of special agents.
Creation
The Bureau of Investigation (BOI) was created on July 26, 1908, after Congress had adjourned for the summer. Attorney General Bonaparte, using Department of Justice expense funds, hired thirty-four people, including some veterans of the Secret Service, to work for a new investigative agency. Its first Chief (the title is now known as Director) was Stanley Finch. Bonaparte notified Congress of these actions in December, 1908. In 1935 its name was officially changed from the Division of
Investigation to the present-day Federal Bureau of Investigation, or
FBI (or the Fabricated Baloney Instigators maybe?)

DeletePerhaps the World Trade Centre would like Canterbury to lend them some of our porta-loos. We seem to have plenty. Although Road Cones are probably out numbering them now.
ReplyDeleteAny Porta Loos to spare Iri. can you please send them to our near neighbours in Herefordshire whose county council last week announced plans to shut every public toilet in the county. This unleashed a storm of protest which forced the Council one-party (Tory) 7 member Cabinet to temporarily abandon the proposal until it has been debated in the full 58 member council, which with a Tory majority means it will probably happen anyway sooner or later. Imagine that ... a county devoid of public conveniences, Herefordshire is going backward heading toward the Stone Age without even being bombed by NATO. Amazing really isn't it? Road cones we're ok for there seems to be no shortage of those judging from all the roadworks I encounter on my travels.

DeleteI am glad you don't need any road cones, we are working ours to the absolute limit these days. I'm thinking they need to form a wee cone union for themselves.

ReplyDeleteI guess the message of the video is "if you don't have enough terrorists on the ground, it appears you have to make some by recruiting poor jerks who belong in a psych ward or a job training center--all to justify increased budgets for spying personnel and gadgets.
Yes that Bonaparte connection sets off alarm bells here too Doug. Your point about the terrorist production line is I think spot on, this isn't a clash of ideologies as the media would have us believe, it is pure gangsterism on a global basis and a serious breakdown in civilisation really.

As Edward Gibbon insightfully wrote in The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (1776–88):-
"The decline of Rome was the natural and inevitable effect of immoderate greatness. Prosperity ripened the principle of decay; the causes of destruction multiplied with the extent of conquest; and as soon as time or accident had removed the artificial supports, the stupendous fabric yielded to the pressure of its own weight."
I think that's what is happening to us, or something similar at least, a new Dark Age has dawned, but like the last one it is not without its shafts of light I think Doug.
Interesting historical analogy, AA, and thanks for reminding me of one of Gibbon's greatest passages from that seminal historical opus. I always thought the moniker "Romulus Augustus" was laying it on a bit thick, but "Hey, whatever works" as they say. (Or doesn't work.)
DeleteThe comparisons is all too apt, especially when you consider how much prosperity (and political power) is being concentrated in fewer hands...and how power is less and less transparent. But I also agree we do have reason to hope.
